Monty Alexander Trio • Love Me Tender

Monty Alexander (born Montgomery Bernard Alexander on 6 June 1944 in Kingston, Jamaica) is a jazz pianist, who also sings and plays the melodica. His playing has a Caribbean influence and bright swinging feeling, with a strong vocabulary of bebop and soulful blues melodies. He was influenced by Oscar Peterson, Les McCann, Ahmad Jamal, and Wynton Kelly. Alexander is known for his surprise musical twists and the ability to build dramatic suspense in his playing.

Alexander discovered the piano when he was four years old, took classical music lessons at the age of six and became interested in jazz piano at the age of 14, and began playing in clubs, and on recording sessions by Clue J & His Blues Blasters, deputising for Aubrey Adams, whom he describes as his hero, when he was unable to play. Two years later, he directed a dance orchestra (Monty and the Cyclones) and played in the local clubs. Performances at the Carib Theater in Jamaica by Louis Armstrong and Nat King Cole left a strong impression on the young pianist.

Alexander and his family moved to Miami, Florida, in 1961. He went to New York City in 1962, where he started to play at Jilly Rizzo's jazz club Jilly's. In addition to performing with Frank Sinatra there, Alexander also met and became friends with bassist Ray Brown and vibist Milt Jackson. In California, in 1964, Alexander recorded his first album, Alexander the Great, for Pacific Jazz at the age of 20.

Alexander recorded with Milt Jackson in 1969, with Ernest Ranglin in 1974 and in Europe the same year with Ed Thigpen. He toured regularly in Europe and recorded there, mostly with his classic trio for MPS Records. He also toured around 1976 with the steelpan player Othello Molineaux. Alexander has also played with several singers such as Ernestine Anderson, Mary Stallings and other important leaders (Dizzy Gillespie, Benny Golson, Jimmy Griffin and Frank Morgan). In his successive trios, he has played frequently with musicians associated with Oscar Peterson: Herb Ellis, Ray Brown, Mads Vinding, Ed Thigpen and Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen.

In the mid-1970s he formed a group consisting of John Clayton on bass and Jeff Hamilton on drums, creating a stir on the jazz-scene in Europe. Their most famous collaboration (and arguably Alexander's finest album) is Montreux Alexander, recorded during the Montreux Jazz Festival in July 1976.

Alexander formed a reggae band in the 1990s, featuring all Jamaican musicians. He has released several reggae albums, including Yard Movement (1996), Stir It Up (1999, a collection of Bob Marley songs), Monty Meets Sly & Robbie (2000), and Goin' Yard (2001). He collaborated again with Ranglin in 2004 on the album Rocksteady.

Alexander married the American jazz guitarist Emily Remler in 1981. They divorced in 1985. Currently, Alexander is married to Italian jazz singer Catarina Zapponi.

Charlie Hunter Quartet • Natty Dread

Review by Bill Meredith
In choosing to record Bob Marley's classic 1974 reggae album Natty Dread track-for-track in an instrumental jazz style, eight-string guitarist Charlie Hunter opened himself up for skepticism. Yet an idea that looked questionable in theory would prove stellar in practice, as Hunter turned Natty Dread -- with the songs sequenced exactly as they were on Marley's original release -- into one of the best CDs of his career. Hunter's customized eight-string instrument and prodigious talent allow him to play simultaneous guitar melodies and basslines, but his Wurlitzer organ simulations and walking bass aren't the only highlights of the opening "Lively Up Yourself." Alto saxophonist Calder Spanier and tenorman Kenny Brooks alternate between swinging leads and supportive harmonies, and drummer Scott Amendola gets in creative solo flurries near the end. Hunter's beautiful intro to "No Woman, No Cry" echoes both Pat Martino and Django Reinhardt; the saxophonists' interplay and Amendola's clever rimshots, tom-toms, and cowbell work lively up "Them Belly Full." The secrets to Hunter's success lie in separate amplifiers for his instrument's guitar and bass portions; great wah-wah pedal work to achieve keyboard tones, and the requisite brain power to play basslines with both thumbs while fretting and fingerpicking the melodies. All are illustrated in readings of the tranquil "Rebel Music," energetic "So Jah Seh" and the shuffling title track. Throughout Natty Dread, reggae is implied more often than played, as Hunter and his quartet portray the fun they had in arranging these pieces with performances both swinging and stirring (even dropping an "I Shot the Sheriff" quote into "Bend Down Low"). Spanier died after Natty Dread's release when he was struck by a car, and Hunter subsequently moved from California to New York and restructured his band. There's no telling what might have come afterward from this quartet of two saxophonists, a drummer, and Hunter, the one-man guitarist, keyboardist, and bassist.

From the surprisingly successful Blue Note Cover Series comes this exceptional disc by multi-talented eight-string guitarist Charlie Hunter. The 29-year old Hunter has made a thankfully unpredictable choice "covering" Bob Marley's influential and popular 1974 reggae classic Natty Dread. Hunter, heard here in a quartet with an alto, tenor sax and drums, resists the urge toward reverential readings and reggae clichés in this music. As a result, the soulful beauty of Marley's outstanding music shines through. Anyone familiar with Hunter's work in the ultra-cool quartet T.J. Kirk can expect another dose of thoughtful, sometimes funky -but always original -takes on somewhat familiar material.

Charlie Hunter, like Bill Frisell and John Abercrombie, can wield any sound he wants to from his guitar (an eight-string is only slightly less weird than Ron Escheté's unimaginably difficult seven-string guitar). Hunter can make his axe wail like an organ, ring like a pedal steel, whine with Hendrix-like feedback or sing like Grant Green on an especially soulful day. Hunter is comfortable in just about any style imaginable too—but he sticks mostly to very accessible playing. What he does with Marley's hit "No Woman, No Cry" is tender, passionate and unbelievably beautiful. It's origins are evident but the liners spell out the influence Bill Frisell and Ry Cooder (nice to see Cooder get his due for a change). Hunter's version has hit potential, and deserves to get widespread airplay. Everyone who heard this song while I played the disc (including my mother, who doesn't like jazz) was just hypnotized by it. Another hit-worthy tune is the marvelous version of the anthem-like "Revolution" which features the reeds. Hunter also kicks out the jams here, crafting a John Patton / John Zorn / Ed Cherry does James Brown groove on "Bend Down Low." And there's something appealing about the '70s Jeff Beck funk of "Lively Up Yourself" and "Talkin' Blues" too. Throughout, Hunter sounds inspired and interested—and the average listener will find as much to appreciate here. A very nice surprise worth checking out.

Another nice surprise is guitarist Fareed Haque's "cover" of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young's 1970 "classic rock" album Deja Vu. Haque's incredible six-string talents (on classic guitar) and the acid-jazz appeal often overcome what could have been simply a smooth-jazz recollection of some hippy-dippy fun. A Blue Note concept (that must have sounded gimmicky on paper) turns out to yield some good, valuable music for the 1990s.

Arnett Cobb & Guy Lafitte • Tenor Abrupt

Review by Al Campbell
As part of The Definitive Black & Blue Sessions series, tenor saxophonist Arnett Cobb is spotlighted on ten digitally remastered tracks, recorded live in France on March 16 and 29, 1980. Cobb recorded several records for Black & Blue, but this straight-ahead live session is special. Paired up with tenor associate Guy Lafitte, Roland Hanna on piano, Jimmy Woode on bass, and Eddie Locke on drums, Cobb is still in excellent form even though this was recorded late in his career. Among the previously unreleased tracks are "Oue Reste-T-Il de Nos Amours," "Make Someone Happy," "The Nearness of You," and "Blues in Deauville."

Calvin Keys • Blue Keys

Review
by Thom Jurek
Since releasing Shaw-Neeq, his seminal 1971 Black Jazz debut album while still a member of Ray Charles' band, guitarist Calvin Keys has recorded only sporadically. In 1975 he issued an extremely worthy Black Jazz follow-up titled Proceed with Caution!, but joined Ahmad Jamal's group and didn't record as a leader until the mid-'80s. He signed with the venerable indie Wide Hive in 2000, issuing the crucial acid jazz classic Detours into Unconscious Rhythms. Blue Keys marks only his fourth outing for the label.

This nine-track set is performed by a star-studded cast that includes Gary Bartz on alto sax, Steve Turre on trombone and shells, Babatunde Lea on percussion, bassists Henry Franklin and Scott Brown, saxophonist Doug Rowan, drummers Thomas McRee and Mike Hughes, pianist/keyboardist Mike Rinta, organist Mike Blankenship, and pianist/producer Gregory Howe.

Set opener "Peregrine's Dive" juxtaposes jaunty post-bop, Latin rhythms, and elegant funk. Introduced by a minor modal piano, a sprightly jazzy guitar run, and Bartz's moaning alto, Turre's trombone enters atop a shuffling, breaking drum kit and double bass. Bartz solos first, weaving sumptuous lines around the band before Turre enters, pushing the crew with a rhythmic approach. Keys adds expansive vamps in direct interplay with trombone and drums. His solo weds complex, rhythmic chord voicings and fluid, edgy single-note runs. The jam ultimately swirls together, moving frenetically yet steadily. It's almost danceable. "CK 22" is introduced by a fingerpopping bass riff before keys and trombone decompress them with open modal circularity; playing both trombone and conch shells, Turre offers harmonic support while Keys delivers a deep blue solo. Speaking of blues, "At Arrival" showcases Keys' canny playing, atop a walking double bass, congas, and drums, while "Making Rain" is a funkier look at jazz-blues à la Phil Upchurch and T-Bone Walker. "Six to Seven" explores dub reggae, post-bop, blues, and funk. Keys' five-note theme is buoyed by brass and reeds atop bumping congas, taut basslines, and percussive syncopation. His guitar winds complex scales yet never abandons the groove. A much edgier blues appears in the title track. Initially, Keys revisits his journey with the Charles band, melding leads, chords, and vamps with a piano accent and swinging Chicago-style horns. Closer "BK 18" is the genuine jazz-funk article. A horn section vamp is urged by the drum kit to set up a frame for Keys, who makes use of Bob Marley's Get Up, Stand Up" in the lyric riff. Rhythmically inventive, Keys solos directly at them before letting the horn section exercise a lyric, harmonic motif that hovers between Fela Kuti and James Brown. The middle-eight breaks the jam open as horns, breaking drums, hypnotic bass, and a meandering keyboard line flow around and through his playing. Following Keys serpentine, cut-to-the-bone solo, the tune concludes with spacy dubwise effects and brassy authority. Though recorded eight years later, Blue Keys picks up where Electric Keys left off yet is more musically advanced and groove-centric. This is powerful stuff.

Sam Yahel, Ari Hoenig, Mike Moreno, Seamus Blake • Jazz Side Of The Moon Music Of Pink Floyd

Editorial Review:
Organist Sam Yahel, trumpeter Seamus Blake, guitarist Mike Moreno and drummer Ari Hoenig perform jazz interpretations of music from the seminal Pink Floyd album, 'Dark Side Of The Moon.' They achieve the seemingly-impossible as they evoke both the thematic spirit of the original recording and its sonic effects, while maintaining the overall conceptual arc and metaphysical implications of Pink Floyd's suite of songs. The result is remarkably powerful both as a jazz combo statement and as a purist, bare-bones audiophile recording - all the while reasserting the grace, power and musical nuance of the original materials. Personnel: Sam Yahel - (Hammond B-3 organ), Mike Moreno - (electric & acoustic guitars), Ari Hoenig - (drums), Seamus Blake - (tenor saxophone)

George Benson • In Concert - Carnegie Hall

Review by Thom Jurek
In Concert -- Carnegie Hall is George Benson's final recording for Creed Taylor's CTI label, and was mostly recorded on one night in 1975. There was some additional recording done at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in 1976, where Taylor replaced the original rhythm section of Wayne Dockery on bass and Marvin Chapell on drums with Will Lee and Steve Gadd, for whatever reason Taylor had at the time. Regardless, this is a solid "live" effort with Benson cooking on all burners, beginning with a monster version of Dave Brubeck's "Take Five," which had been cut on an earlier album and had become a staple in the live set. Organist Ronnie Foster's backing skills here are indispensable, as they keep Benson talking to the other members of the band. The version of "Summertime" here could have been recorded by Phil Spector. The concert version of the tune -- on which Benson takes a vocal -- has been added to with the substitution of the rhythm section and the later addition of a string orchestra in the studio. (Perhaps Taylor understood Benson's crossover appeal; he would cross over into the pop charts on Warner the next year with "This Masquerade.") The crowd dug it, but it's simply OK over the test of time. Hipper is the long snaky groove of Benson's own "Gone," with begins with the steady pulse of Hubert Laws playing a counterpoint foil on flute. The entwining harmonic interplay between the two is gorgeous and goes on for over ten minutes. The band then takes on Freddie Hubbard's "Sky Dive" with real aplomb. The Latin rhythm and slippery guitar by Benson pull the rhythm section up a notch before he begins the head. His funky articulation of fifths and then eighths in his break is mesmerizing. The way Chapell rides the cymbal like a bell is particularly satisfying. The album closes on another Benson original with Laws popping in again. It's called "Octane." Over ten minutes in length, it begins with Benson in full roar before the time signature changes and triples, feeling like a bebop tune more than anything else. Foster keeps it all grounded, but this baby swings so hard it threatens to lift off. In retrospect, listening to this record in the 21st century, it's difficult to imagine Benson making the switch from a classy guitar firebrand to a pop star so quickly.

Nicola Conte • Bossa Per Due

Review by Nicholas Gordon
Italian arranger, producer, DJ, musician, and general purveyor of acid jazz and bossa for the Scema label and the Fez movement, Nicola Conte's Bossa Per Due full-length for the American Eighteenth Street Lounge (ESL) label takes a much needed step in revitalizing a stagnant stateside genre. A classically trained musician, Conte has worked on several notable projects including recordings by Paolo Achenza Trio, Fez Combo, Intensive Jazz Sextet, and Balanco, where his touch, ear, and stamp of approval have propelled these projects to underground acclaim. The record works through 12 tracks of developing cool, loungy atmosphere on a foundation of steady grooving rhythms evolving from cold bossa on the stellar title track, "Bossa Per Due," and "Jet Sounds," to acid-funk breaks on the sitar/tabla-complimented "Dossier Omega," to essential samba on "The In Samba," to swinging jazz on "Jazz Pour Dadine." Regardless of the style Conte takes on and turns out with his signature sound, he produces each sample, vocal, or beat in a way that creates a punchy and vital musical environment that never ceases to strut its suave sexiness. Released in the U.S. by ESL, most notable for the Thievery Corporation, this record is sure to become a genre classic!

Biography
Italian DJ/producer Nicola Conte's loungey brand of acid jazz relies extensively on bossa nova, but is also heavily influenced by the swinging soundtracks of Italian films in the '60s and '70s, plus touches of ethnic music and easy listening kitsch reminiscent of Japan's Pizzicato Five. That said, his career trajectory has also seen him delve deeply into jazz as a guitarist, composer, and arranger, leading bands comprised of superstars, playing music that touches on '60s Brazilian traditions, '70s spiritual jazz, and even modal post-bop. He is also a curator and has released numerous volumes in his Viagem series, which compiles rare tracks from many international musical traditions in thematic collections.

Part of the loose-knit Fez collective of artsy acid jazz revivalists centered in the Italian town of Bari, Conte was a classically trained musician who moved into production and DJ'ing, working with artists like the Paolo Achenza Trio, the Fez Combo, Balanco, Quintetto X, and the Intensive Jazz Sextet. Conte also masterminded the Schema label, which gave many of those artists a home and cultivated a trademark, distinctly Italian approach to acid jazz. As for his own recording career, Conte scored an underground hit with his first single, "Bossa per Due," which appeared on a variety of compilations and was licensed in the U.S. for an Acura commercial. Conte's first album to be released in America was also titled Bossa per Due, a slightly reconfigured version of the Italian Jet Sounds; it appeared on Thievery Corporation's ESL (Eighteenth Street Lounge) label in the summer of 2001. The remix album Jet Sounds Revisited followed in late 2002. Two years later, Conte bowed on Blue Note's French subsidiary with an assured jazz date, Other Directions. Quiet Stars and a slew of singles followed before Conte would return with Viagem, his curated selection of classic Brazilian recordings in 2008, followed by four more volumes between 2009 and 2013. These were followed by a two-CD set of electronic recordings entitled The Modern Sound of Nicola Conte: Versions in Jazz Dub in early 2009.

That same year, Conte explored Latin jazz, Brazilian pop, and John Coltrane's early sense of experiments as inspirations for Rituals, an exotic, wide-ranging jazz album that featured five different vocalists. The use of singers was expanded to eight on 2011's Love & Revolution, an exercise in European pop, jazz balladry, and Eastern-tinged and modal jazz that included performances by Jose James, Gregory Porter, Melanie Charles, and Ghalia Benali, and was followed by the Brazilian-themed EP Sketches of Samba in 2013.

Conte forged ahead in his explorations, wedding deep modal and spiritual jazz to sophisticated pop. This resulted in Free Souls in the spring of 2014, an album that once again utilized vocalists -- including James and Charles -- and was comprised of expansive originals and standards, including tunes by Ahmad Jamal and Hoagy Carmichael. In the '90s, Conte had worked with vocalist Stefania Dipierro in a band called Fez. They reprised their partnership for 2016's Natural, a program of originals, jazz standards, and bossa/samba classics. Conte wrote some of the original tunes, produced the album, and played guitar, while Dipierro wrote others and sang in the company of a Conte-assembled band that included some of Italy's finest jazz musicians, including trumpeter Fabrizio Bosso and saxist/flutist Gaetano Partipilo. After touring the record, the pair went their separate ways with the intention of working together again in the future. Conte issued a pair of collaborative singles with Gianluca Petrella: "African Spirits"/"New World Shuffle" in December of 2017, and "Sun Song b/w "Nigeria" in the late winter of 2018. He was also the subject of the Schema compilation The Modern Sounds of Nicola Conte: Versions in Jazz-Dub. In May, Conte issued the full-length Let Your Light Shine with an international all-star cast of jazz and world music musicians under the umbrella Nicola Conte & Spiritual Galaxy. They included vocalists Bridgette Amofah, Zara McFarlane, Carolina Bubbico, and Zoe Modica, and instrumentalists Logan Richardson on alto sax, Magnus Lindgren on tenor and flute, Theo Croker on trumpet, Pietro Lussu on keyboards, and Gianluca Petrella on trombone and Moog.

Johnny Coles • Katumbo (Dance)

Biography
by Scott Yanow
A fine trumpeter with a distinctive cry, Johnny Coles long had the ability to say a lot with a few notes. He played with a few top R&B bands, including Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson (1948-1951), Bull Moose Jackson (1952), and Earl Bostic (1955-1956); was with James Moody's group (1956-1958); and appeared on several Gil Evans records between 1958-1964. Probably his most significant association was with the 1964 Charles Mingus Sextet that toured Europe. Also in the group were Eric Dolphy, Clifford Jordan, Jaki Byard, and Dannie Richmond. Coles can be seen holding his own against those giants on a European television show (available on a Shanachie video), but he had to leave the tour halfway through due to a sudden illness. He also played with Herbie Hancock's sextet (1968-1969), Ray Charles (1969-1971), Duke Ellington (1971-1974), Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers (briefly in 1976), Dameronia, Mingus Dynasty, and the Count Basie band when it was under Thad Jones' leadership (1985-1986), but fame managed to elude him. Coles led sessions through the years for Epic, Blue Note, Mainstream, and finally for Criss Cross, before passing away from cancer.

Larry Carlton • The Warner Albums

Biography by Richard Skelly
A hugely successful guitarist and composer, Larry Carlton emerged from the Los Angeles studio scene of the late '60s, eventually becoming a popular contemporary jazz artist in his own right. Noted for his lithe technique, sweet-toned, blues-inflected sound, and distinctive use of volume pedals, Carlton first came to prominence as a member of crossover jazz and R&B outfit the Crusaders. From there, he developed into an in-demand session player, recording on up to 500 albums a year and appearing on over 100 gold albums. His studio credits from the '70s and early '80s include work with musicians and groups like Steely Dan, Joni Mitchell, Michael Jackson, Sammy Davis, Jr., Herb Alpert, Quincy Jones, Bobby Bland, Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, and literally dozens of others. Although he recorded a number of LPs under his own name as early as 1968, he didn't land a major-label contract until 1978, when he signed with Warner Bros. and began a long stretch of releasing his own albums. Along the way he also expanded into film and television work, and picked up his first of four Grammy Awards for his work on the Hill Street Blues theme. With over 30 of his own albums and a regular touring schedule, Carlton remains a well-respected, highly sought-after performer.

A native of Torrance, California, Carlton began taking guitar lessons when he was six. His first professional gig was at a supper club in 1962. After hearing Joe Pass on the radio, he was inspired to play jazz and blues. Wes Montgomery and Barney Kessel became important influences soon after he discovered the jazz guitar stylings of Pass. B.B. King and other blues guitarists had an impact on Carlton's style as well. He honed his guitar-playing skills in the clubs and studios of greater Los Angeles while he attended a local junior college and Long Beach State College for a year until the Vietnam War ended. Carlton toured with the Fifth Dimension in 1968 and began doing studio sessions in 1970. His early session work included studio dates with pop musicians like Vikki Carr, Andy Williams, and the Partridge Family.

In 1971, he was asked to join the Crusaders shortly after they'd decided to drop the word "Jazz" from their name, and he remained with the group until 1976. In between tours with the Crusaders, he also did studio session work for hundreds of recordings in every genre. But it was while he with the Crusaders that he developed his signature, highly rhythmic, often bluesy style. Carlton delivered his self-titled debut for Warner Bros. in 1978, shortly after he was recognized for his groundbreaking guitar playing on Steely Dan's Royal Scam album. (Carlton contributed the memorable guitar solo on "Kid Charlemagne.'')

He released four more albums for Warner Bros., Strikes Twice (1980), Sleepwalk (1981), Eight Times Up (1982), and the Grammy-nominated Friends (1983), before parting ways with the label. Also during this period, he branched out into writing for TV and films, composing music for Against All Odds, Who's the Boss, and the theme for Hill Street Blues. The latter won a Grammy Award in 1981 for Best Pop Instrumental Performance. He continued studio session work and toured in between, emerging again in 1986 on MCA Records with an all-acoustic album, Discovery, which contained an instrumental remake of Michael McDonald's hit "Minute by Minute." The single won a Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance in 1987. Carlton's live album Last Nite, released in 1987, got him a Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance.

While working on his next album for MCA, On Solid Ground, Carlton was the victim of random gun violence, and was shot in the throat by gun-wielding juveniles outside Room 335, his private studio near Burbank, California. The bullet shattered his vocal cords and caused significant nerve trauma, but through intensive therapy and a positive frame of mind, Carlton completed work on On Solid Ground in 1989. He formed Helping Innocent People (HIP), a nonprofit group to aid victims of random gun violence.

Despite the tragedy foisted on him in the late '80s after he was shot, with a long period of hospitalization and rehabilitation, Carlton continued his active recording and performing schedule over the next two decades, beginning with a number of albums during the '90s on the GRP label: 1992's Kid Gloves; 1993's Renegade Gentleman; 1995's Larry & Lee (with Lee Ritenour); and 1996's The Gift. Carlton also released the 1995 holiday collection Christmas at My House on MCA. And in 1997 he replaced Lee Ritenour in the popular contemporary jazz outfit Fourplay, first appearing on the group's 4 album in 1998.

The 2000s found Carlton as active as ever, recording live and in the studio as both leader and collaborator for a variety of labels. Two albums on Warner Bros. began the decade, Fingerprints -- including guest appearances by Michael McDonald, Vince Gill, Kirk Whalum, and Vinnie Colaiuta -- in 2000, and Deep Into It in 2001. A popular concert draw in Japan, Carlton could be heard as a collaborator on two live recordings from that island country during the decade, Live in Osaka (with Steve Lukather), issued in 2001 on the Favored Nations label, and Live in Tokyo (with Robben Ford) on 335 Records in 2007.

Meanwhile, his albums as a leader continued, with Sapphire Blue and Fire Wire released by Bluebird/RCA in 2004 and 2005, respectively, and The Jazz King -- with Carlton leading an all-star band performing music he composed on commission to celebrate the 80th birthday and ascension to the throne of Thailand’s King Bhumibol Adulyadej -- issued by Sony BMG in 2008. In 2009 Carlton appeared as guest guitarist on selected dates during Steely Dan's U.S. summer tour. Take Your Pick (with Tak Matsumoto) appeared in 2010.

In 2011, he paid homage to Philly soul pioneers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff with Larry Carlton Plays the Sound of Philadelphia. Also that year, he played on vocalist Michele Pillar's holiday album I Hear Angels Calling. Four Hands & a Heart, Vol. 1 appeared in 2012, followed by the holiday-themed Four Hands & a Heart Christmas in 2014. Over the next several years, Carlton remained busy touring, and he recorded with Paul Brown, Fourplay, and the SWR Big Band. In 2018, he joined actor/comedian/musician Harry Shearer on the Derek Smalls album Smalls Change (Meditations Upon Ageing).

Take Your Pick (con Tak Matsumoto) apareció en 2010.
